Brasilia > Paintings

Fortunately, we can also remember one warming light that we met.

That of the constancy, goodwill and unwavering support of Silvestre Gorgulho, Secretary of Culture of the Federal District in those years, who supported Elaine over the entire duration of all her actions, and engaged his Secretariat by helping our draft project to be certified by the Commission in charge of the selection of international artists and events officially selected by the Brazilian state for the Celebrations of the city’s Jubilee. Thereby, I had the honour of being the sole French artist invited by the City and its Secretariat of Culture, as part of those celebrations. Silvestre Gorgulho's support and that of his administration, in partnership with the Brazilian Ministry of Culture, was objectively considerable ; truly a distinct honour, which today always merits to be given its full due.

This support took life in early 2010, when Elaine told me the news that she was to take the lead at Renato Russo 508 Sul Cultural Center located in Brasília’s Asa Sul (the city’s South Wing, in Lúcio Costa’s original Master Plan “Plano Piloto”), unarguably a celebrated place of culture, experimentation and art in the city. Elaine pointed that she meant to program my exhibition in the Cultural Center’s most spacious and most beautiful gallery, the Rubem Valentim Gallery (an absolutely splendid and huge space, indeed), and that the exhibition would be listed on the official Cultural Events’ Program established by the Jubilee Selection Committee.

No word could describe that day’s burst of joy – none. Thus I shall not even try to find any.

But I certainly owe Elaine one of the most beautiful days in my life on this occasion -a day that was auspicious of many others to come, once arrived in the capital of Brazil, and when my exhibition opened.
