Orly > Paintings

I thus feel a lot of tenderness, affection and gratitude for Stefania Bator, the Director of the ADP Photo Library ("ADP" having become "Paris Aéroport" in the meantime), whom I had contacted in 2003 and who opened the door very spontaneously and very generously to the treasures she archived in this remote building in the Orly Airport's housing zone. The study of the photos that Stefania gave me access to allowed me to understand how the building was built structurally, and made me discover its recesses and certain angles of its volumes unknown to the general public - and thus to me.

After my false start and my trial and mistakes related to this Orly (Sud) series in 2003 / 2004 (and reported in this Background chapter’s beginning), I would not see Stefania again until 2011, when my vision of Orly had matured enough to decide to embark on a full-time series of works dedicated to the South Wing. Then again, Stefania granted me her active and unconditional support. It is thanks to her that I was able to carry out a documentary photographic report at night, for the second part of my Orly (Sud) work, so that certain paintings could not have existed without this nocturnal spotting -as for instance, Fantômas contre Fantômas (ou le Vain Combat).

In 2012, the first series of Orly (Sud) paintings was exhibited by the Dubois Friedland Gallery in Brussels, with the support of the French Embassy in Belgium. While the event in some ways failed to meet its audience, I must pay tribute to the conviction and energy that Paule Friedland and Michel Dubois lavished on this very beautiful exhibition within their walls.
And also, to the interest and support shown by Jean-Pierre Jarjanette, the Diplomat at the head of the Cooperation and Cultural Action Service of the Embassy of France in Brussels, who appreciated enough the exhibited work to publicize the show among the cultural circles that he knew in the Belgian capital.
